Fairmount Friends Winter Clothing Drive

The Youth Initiative Project (YIP) partnered with community elementary schools, Coleman and Fifth Ave. Elementary, to collect winter clothing for those in need. Youth not only gathered clothing but made environmentally-friendly laundry detergent to clean the clothing then sorted them as part of a service learning project initiated by the youth under Learn and Serve Rhode Island.

Over 200 pieces of clothing were generously donated to those in need by members of the Woonsocket community. This including more than 50 coats, 60 sweaters and long-sleeved shirts, 20 pairs of pants, and 40 accessories such as hats, gloves, and scarves. On Friday February 4, 2011, youth presented their collection to the Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless (RICH). The distribution event featured speakers about homelessness in RI and reflection by the youth involved in the project.
